A palanquin is a human-powered vehicle that carries people. The seat is suspended from a pole, and several people carry the pole from the front and back. It was widely used up until the Edo period, but with the development of roads in the Meiji period, it was rapidly replaced by rickshaws, and by 1872 it had almost completely disappeared, having completed its role as a means of transportation.
