Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was one of the greatest painters of the early Northern Renaissance. It's even been claimed that he invented oil painting as we know it, though that's a bit much. In any event, he stood first among the Flemish masters who brought a new realism to European art, alongside Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Peter Paul Rubens.

His most famous work is probably The Arnolfini Wedding, which uses light and shadow to portray three-dimensionality and perspective to a degree unprecedented in painting — and even included a selfie.
