Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) is remembered as one of the most influential painters of the Baroque era. His works broke away from idealized Renaissance traditions, favoring radical realism and dramatic chiaroscuro. A single shaft of light often cuts across the darkness, igniting flesh and fabric with sudden brilliance while leaving the rest in impenetrable shadow. His brushstrokes are dense and tactile, pressing pigment into rough textures of cloth, stone, and skin, creating an atmosphere of raw immediacy and intensity.
