Cassandra Peterson is an American actress, singer, writer, and entrepreneur, best known for creating and portraying the iconic character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. However, outside of her Elvira persona, she has had a fascinating career.
Early Life and Career Before Elvira:
Born on September 17, 1951, in Manhattan, Kansas, Peterson developed an early love for horror and the macabre.
In her late teens, she worked as a showgirl in Las Vegas, where she performed at The Dunes Hotel. During this time, she briefly dated Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to pursue a singing career.
She later moved to Italy and became the lead singer for an Italian rock band called I Latins 80, performing in nightclubs.
Acting and Entertainment Career:
In the 1970s, she appeared in minor film and TV roles, including a small part in James Bond's Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and the biker film Roma (1972) directed by Federico Fellini.
She was part of the Los Angeles-based improv comedy group The Groundlings, which helped her refine her comedic skills and later develop Elvira.
Before Elvira, she had a brief stint as a radio DJ and personality.
Work Outside of Elvira:
While Elvira remains her most famous role, Peterson has also appeared in other projects as herself, including guest appearances on talk shows, sitcoms, and reality TV.
She has written an autobiography, Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark, detailing her life, career, and personal journey.
Behind the scenes, she has been involved in producing and licensing Elvira merchandise, making her a successful entrepreneur.
