Poison Ivy, born Kristy Marlana Wallace on February 20, 1953, is an American guitarist, songwriter, and co-founder of the Cramps, a pioneering psychobilly and punk rock band. Known for her signature twangy, reverb-heavy guitar sound, she played a crucial role in shaping the band's unique style, blending rockabilly, garage rock, and punk with horror movie aesthetics.
Early Life & Formation of The Cramps
Born in San Bernardino, California, she later attended Sacramento State University, where she met Erick Purkhiser (Lux Interior) in 1972.
The two became romantically involved and formed The Cramps in 1976 in New York City.
The band emerged as part of the CBGB punk scene, alongside bands like the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads.
Musical Style & Influence
Poison Ivy was the lead guitarist and primary songwriter for the band, contributing to their signature "psychobilly" sound—a fusion of 1950s rockabilly, surf rock, punk, and B-movie horror themes.
Her guitar work was heavily influenced by Link Wray, Duane Eddy, and 1950s rock & roll.
She frequently played Gretsch guitars, often with a vintage tremolo effect, giving her sound a spooky, hypnotic quality.

Gifting me buzz is great, but training is 99% done locally, so others could use it more.
