The 1980s saw Stevie Nicks transition from being the mystical voice of Fleetwood Mac to a solo rock icon while continuing to contribute to the band's success. This decade was a whirlwind of chart-topping albums, collaborations, personal struggles, and iconic performances.
1981 – Bella Donna (Solo Debut)
Stevie officially launched her solo career with Bella Donna, which reached #1 on the Billboard 200.
The album featured some of her most famous songs:
"Edge of Seventeen" – A high-energy rock anthem with an iconic guitar riff.
"Leather and Lace" (duet with Don Henley of The Eagles).
"Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (with Tom Petty, who became a lifelong friend and mentor).
This album solidified her image as a standalone rock star while maintaining her signature witchy, bohemian style.
1982 – Fleetwood Mac's Mirage
Despite her solo success, she remained committed to Fleetwood Mac, releasing Mirage in 1982.
Stevie’s contributions included:
"Gypsy" – One of her most personal songs, reflecting on her pre-fame struggles.
"Straight Back" – Written about the intense emotional toll of her rising fame.
The album was a commercial success but had a softer, more polished sound compared to Tusk.
1983 – The Wild Heart
Her second solo album, The Wild Heart, further cemented her stardom, blending rock and new wave sounds.
Key songs:
"Stand Back" – Inspired by Prince’s "Little Red Corvette"; he even played uncredited synths on the track.
"If Anyone Falls" – A dreamy, synth-heavy ballad.
"Nightbird" – A tribute to her close friend Robin Anderson, who passed away from leukemia.
The Wild Heart was a commercial hit, reaching #5 on the Billboard 200.
1985 – Rock a Little
This album had a more pop-driven sound, reflecting the mid-’80s musical landscape.
"Talk to Me" and "I Can’t Wait" became big hits, keeping her on MTV and radio airwaves.
This was also when Stevie’s struggles with substance abuse worsened, leading her to check into the Betty Ford Clinic for cocaine addiction.
1987 – Fleetwood Mac’s Tango in the Night
The album became one of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest sellers of the decade.
Stevie’s songs:
"Seven Wonders" – A mystical, upbeat track that later gained new life thanks to American Horror Story.
"Welcome to the Room… Sara" – About her stint in rehab.
However, her presence in the band was limited due to her drug-related struggles, causing tensions within the group.
1989 – The Other Side of the Mirror
Marked a return to a more dreamlike and atmospheric sound.
Features "Rooms on Fire," one of her last big solo hits of the '80s.
Despite the album’s moderate success, her addiction issues worsened, leading to a doctor-mandated break from touring after being prescribed Klonopin.
