Grandfather Frost (Ded Moroz) is the main fairytale character of the Russian New Year's celebration, the Russian equivalent of Santa Claus.

He has been known (as Moroz Ivanovich) since 1840, but the creation of the canonical image of Grandfather Frost as an obligatory character of the New Year's, rather than Christmas, holiday occurred during the Soviet period and dates back to the late 1930s.

Grandfather Frost is depicted as an old man in a colorful (blue, dark blue, or white) fur coat, with a long white beard and a staff in his hand, wearing felt boots. He travels in a sleigh pulled by three horses. He often comes accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka (Snow Maiden). Grandfather Frost is also sometimes accompanied by various forest animals.

Officially, Grandfather Frost's birthday is celebrated on November 18th. This date was chosen for a reason: it is then that the first persistent frosts and snowfall occur in Veliky Ustyug (his official residence).

Since 1999, Veliky Ustyug has been considered the official birthplace of the Russian Grandfather Frost. His residence is located there, with 12 rooms (one for each month of the year), a post office, workshops, and a fairytale trail.
