Apsaras are spirits that appear in Indosphere cultures, spreading throughout South, Southeast and East Asia through Hindu and Buddhist mythology. These celestial beings play a similar role as Nymphs and Fairies in western stories; seductive female nature spirits often associated with water and the sky, and serving as the consorts of powerful men and gods, or as distractions and traps for vulnerable men. Like the Muses in Greek mythology, Apsara's also serve as entertainers and spirits of performing arts.
Because there are little to no named or specifically described Apsaras, artistic depictions of them tend to lean towards generalized images of voluptuous women with exposed skin, adorned in accessories and a poses ranging from sensual to religious. Stage performances and dance costumes often contain Apsaras for the female performers as well.
