Sugar painting is a traditional Chinese folk handicraft that involves creating pictures using sugar. As the name suggests, sugar painting is both a form of art and a sweet treat that can be enjoyed. It is also known as "sugar figurines," "sugar cakes," or "sugar lantern shadows" in Chinese folklore. There are two types of sugar painting: flat sugar painting and three-dimensional sugar painting.

Only a spoon and a shovel are used as tools for sugar painting. The sugar material used is usually a combination of red and white sugar with a small amount of malt sugar. It is heated on a stove until it becomes stringy and is then used to pour and mold shapes. The artist uses a small ladle to scoop up the melted sugar and quickly pours it onto a stone slab to create the desired shape. The skill of the artist's hands is crucial in creating the shape. Once the shape is complete, the sugar painting is lifted with a small spatula and attached to a bamboo skewer.

Sugar painting is an authentic folk art and a unique street market art that is loved by the people. It is a popular craft food that can be found at temple fairs, markets, and parks throughout China.
