We are less than two years away from AI allowing such images to become fully functioning 3D assets, with working physics systems (water, tree movement, falling leaves etc) automatically. The coming AI impact on video games cannot be overstated!
Depends. If we skip everything altogether and go straight to the world models... maybe. The issue with those is the heavy limitation in design. If that's solved... and it's a huge IF, as it's a major challenge, then yes, you're right.
If we end up having to use more traditional workflows involving 3D models, textures, animations... then the path will be slower. We will have decent looking 3D models within that timeline for sure, but we don't just need that. We need great looking models which faithfully capture the concept art in every way (so you can have a product whose art all fits), is performant (a big issue no one is really tackling), can be tweaked (no one is really tackling this in a way which won't necessitate huge loads of manual work). Then you need AI integrated into the physics and mechanics of engines (namely Unreal or Unity). There are tons of little details to be solved, and the feasibility is in those details. There's a lot of dunning-kruger going on
