    Was not sure what this was, but looking closely at the comparison and it seems to apply foundation makeup on the skin, making it more smooth.

    Not really, although it can appear that way but maybe it's more obvious in use. Subsurface scattering is basically light shining through a translucent surface and bouncing. Hold a torch close to the far side of your hand at night, the effect you see is what SSS achieves. Someone else may be able to explain it better.
