    style of Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is a unique heraldic design that represents an individual, family, organization, or country. It originated in medieval Europe as a means of identifying knights on the battlefield and has since evolved into a symbol of identity and heritage.

A coat of arms typically consists of several elements, including a shield, a crest, supporters, a motto, and various symbols and colors. The shield serves as the central focus and often displays important symbols, such as animals, plants, objects, or geometric patterns, that hold significance to the individual or group being represented. The crest is located above the shield and usually includes additional symbols or elements that further highlight the identity or achievements of the bearer.

Supporters are figures, often animals or mythological creatures, that stand on either side of the shield and lend support to its overall design. They can represent allegiances, virtues, or historical connections. A motto, written on a ribbon or scroll, accompanies the coat of arms and conveys a message or guiding principle associated with the bearer.

Coats of arms are steeped in tradition and symbolism. They are carefully designed to reflect the history, achievements, and values of the individual or group they represent. Each element within a coat of arms has specific meanings, and their combination and arrangement contribute to the overall narrative and visual appeal of the design.

Coats of arms are widely used in heraldry, genealogy, and ceremonial occasions. They can be found on flags, banners, official documents, architecture, and personal possessions. They serve as a visual representation of identity, lineage, and achievements, and are often passed down through generations as a cherished symbol of heritage.

In summary, a coat of arms is a unique and symbolic design that represents an individual, family, organization, or country. It embodies a rich history and heritage, encapsulating the values, achievements, and identity of its bearer.

    what is blazons?

    cliang96844Jun 13, 2024

@TangBohu From wikipedia: "In heraldry and heraldic vexillology, a blazon is a formal description of a coat of arms, flag or similar emblem, from which the reader can reconstruct the appropriate image."

Since blazon is highly codified, you can reconstruct the entire coat of arm (well, the shield and the crest at least) with the words alone, akin to an equivalent to a kind of high-level programming language for heraldric devices.

For example, the blazon "A chief Or charged with a fessed antler azure; Argent a cross gules" describes the coat of arm of Schwandorf Hegaualb, which is a simple coat of arm in two parts, including a narrow horizontal yellow band on the top displaying a blue sideways antler, and below that a red cross over a white field. Blazons can be used to describe incredibly complex coat of arms where plain words simple fail.

Blazoned heraldry is also well-documented, as historically recorded in rolls of arms. So that's one major advantage when it comes to datasets. Search "Coats of arms by blazon" on wikimedia commons and you will find image files with corresponding blazons (although some only in French and/or German, not english). Also Source-Blazons wikia also has many examples.
