Geisha(Geiko) are professional hostesses who entertain guests at banquets, known as ozashiki. They spend years training in traditional arts, including playing the shamisen (a three-stringed instrument), performing classical dances, and mastering the art of hospitality. They are living custodians of Japanese culture, wearing elegant silk kimonos and distinctive makeup
When AI generates images of Japanese women from the past, the results often appear—at least to me, as a Japanese person—to be quite bizarre, as if they were a hodgepodge of geisha, maiko, oiran, princesses, and various other archetypes. In reality, these figures represent distinct roles, each with its own specific appearance:
・Geisha (or geiko): Performers who sing and dance at banquets to enliven the atmosphere. They tend to be older on average and wear relatively chic attire and hair ornaments. (This profession still exists today.)
・Maiko: Young girls in the midst of their apprenticeship to become geiko. They are quite young; while their hairstyles resemble those of geiko, their clothing and hair ornaments are far more flamboyant. (This role also still exists today.)
・Oiran: Extremely high-ranking courtesans—figures entirely beyond the reach of the common people. They are characterized by elaborate, unconventional hairstyles, incredibly ostentatious kimonos, and distinctive combs worn in their hair. (This role no longer exists.)
・Princesses (*hime-sama*): Daughters of shoguns or daimyo (feudal lords). They typically wore high-end kimonos and hair ornaments, featuring a unique hairstyle that often incorporated hairpieces or wigs. (Naturally, this role no longer exists.)
