Sindel first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995, created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, as the queen of the realm of Edenia and the mother of Princess Kitana. In the original timeline she ruled beside King Jerrod until Edenia lost ten consecutive Mortal Kombat tournaments and Shao Kahn invaded from Outworld. Jerrod was killed, the infant Kitana was taken and raised as Kahn’s daughter, and Sindel was forced into marriage with the conqueror. Unable to endure that captivity, she died, and Kahn bound her soul rather than release it. Ten thousand years later, with the aid of the fallen Elder God Shinnok, Kahn resurrected her on Earthrealm. That rebirth was the key that let him cross the barrier between realms and begin the invasion of Earth. Her Mortal Kombat 3 biography presents her as reborn with evil intentions at Kahn’s side, a banshee queen whose scream, levitation, and living hair made her one of the tournament’s most distinctive fighters.
Her story does not stay in that pawn role. In the semi-canonical Mortal Kombat 3 ending she recovers visions of Jerrod, Kitana, and Edenia, turns on Shao Kahn, and by defeating him frees Earthrealm and restores Edenia so she can reunite with her daughter. She returns as a playable fighter in Mortal Kombat: Deception, still searching for records of her past and of the man who held Kitana, and she stands with the Forces of Light at the Battle of Armageddon, where she is killed. The 2011 timeline revises the sacrifice: Sindel gives her life to raise a ward that keeps Kahn out of Earthrealm, then is resurrected and mind-controlled into slaughtering many of Earthrealm’s champions, including Kitana, before Nightwolf’s own sacrifice stops her. Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath retcons her again, revealing a Sindel who had been complicit with Kahn, who had killed Jerrod herself, and who chooses the emperor over Kitana. Across those versions she remains the white-haired Edenian sovereign whose sonic scream, floating stride, and hair used as a whip define her kombat.
Mortal Kombat 1, set in Liu Kang’s New Era, rebuilds her as Empress of Outworld rather than Kahn’s consort. An arranged marriage to the noble Jerrod becomes a genuine partnership and the start of a golden age; she is mother to twin daughters, Mileena the elder and Kitana. After Jerrod is murdered she fights faction plots to protect their birthright, with Shao reduced to a general and Li Mei’s Umgadi as her guard. Her design stays consistent enough to lock: pale light skin, a lean athletic frame, hair past the waist in white and silver-gray cut by a black streak from the hairline, pale or fully white eyes, dark eye makeup, purple lipstick, and a tight sleeveless black-and-purple bodice with a deep neckline, high-cut hips, long gloves, and thigh-high boots trimmed in purple. She is an adult Edenian queen throughout, whether tragic, corrupted, or imperial.
