Sheila the Thief entered television on September 17, 1983, in the premiere episode “The Night of No Tomorrow,” the opening of the CBS animated series Dungeons & Dragons, produced by Marvel Productions in association with TSR and aired through December 7, 1985. Voiced by Katie Leigh, she is one of six people from Earth pulled out of an amusement-park dark ride and into the Realm, a world of portals, ruined citadels, and the Dungeon Master’s cryptic trials. She is the older sister of Bobby the Barbarian and travels with Hank the Ranger, Eric the Cavalier, Diana the Acrobat, Presto the Magician, and the baby unicorn Uni. The Dungeon Master assigns her the thief’s role and a cloak of invisibility precisely because she would never have chosen that role for herself; the handbook text written for the series says he trusted her to use the power responsibly. On screen she is drawn with short fiery orange hair to the collarbone, a violet mini-tunic, brown thigh-high boots, and a deep purple hooded cloak, the hood left down until she chooses to vanish. The image lock used here ages that design to a woman in her early twenties, fair-skinned with green eyes, the same cut of hair, the same violet dress, brown boots, and uncovered hood.

Across the twenty-seven broadcast episodes she is the party’s cautious heart and its stealth arm. The official character note calls her sensitive and caring, afraid of losing her friends and more afraid of being alone, so she stays open and friendly in a way that can look gullible and sometimes walks her into trouble. She tries to be a steady example for Bobby and will raise the hood, disappear, and cross a guarded hall when the group needs a key, a warning, or a way out. In “Citadel of Shadow” she helps Kareena, a woman trapped by a spell who is revealed as Venger’s sister and rival, and faces a personal choice between a route home and saving Kareena from Venger. In “The Treasure of Tardos” the Realm tests how easily kindness can be turned; in other chapters she is the one who says the plan is too thin, then still goes first under the cloak. The hood, once raised, hides her completely. She uses that gift at real risk, and the series keeps returning to the same idea: the thief who did not want the job is the one who can be trusted with it.

The show ended on December 7, 1985, without the intended finale. Michael Reaves wrote an unproduced episode, “Requiem,” that would have confirmed Venger as the Dungeon Master’s corrupted son, redeemed him, and left the six travelers able to go home or stay and face what evil remained. Later print kept the party in circulation: Spanish Dragones y Mazmorras comics in the mid-1980s, the 2006 Animated Series Handbook, IDW’s Saturday Morning Adventures runs including Prisoner of the Deep and Here There Be Pirates, an Endless Summer special, and scattered cameos. Those later pages still read her as the orange-haired sister with the invisibility cloak, the careful voice beside Bobby and Uni. The prompts that follow keep that spirit and that wardrobe, hood down, head uncovered, and render her throughout as the early-twenties woman specified for this set.
