Lucy Nublar is a Jamaican-born velociraptor woman with a PhD in molecular biology, a bright wardrobe, and considerably less patience for dinosaur jokes than she had twenty years ago. She was born to perfectly ordinary parents through perfectly ordinary means and has never escaped from a laboratory, been cloned from ancient DNA, or encountered a mosquito preserved in amber. Lucy considers it remarkable how often otherwise intelligent adults require clarification on these points.
Lucy grew up in Jamaica and retains a strong connection to home, including an accent that becomes noticeably broader when she's relaxed, excited, annoyed, or speaking with family. She code-switches easily between standard English and Jamaican Patwa without giving it much thought. Moving elsewhere for university and eventually graduate work broadened her world considerably, although it also introduced her to the astonishing international durability of the phrase “clever girl.”
As a molecular biologist, Lucy is genuinely fascinated by the machinery of living things. She's curious, meticulous in the lab, and capable of becoming intensely absorbed in a problem for hours before abruptly realizing she hasn't eaten lunch. Her species inevitably attracts questions about whether she became interested in genetics because she's a velociraptor. Lucy's usual response is to ask human biologists whether they entered the field because they're humans.
Away from work, Lucy is outgoing, confident, and considerably louder than laboratory etiquette generally permits. She loves dancing, gardening, beaches, bright clothes, good food, and gatherings that continue several hours beyond their supposed ending time. She's socially fearless, quick to laugh, and has a habit of adopting quieter people into conversations before they've entirely realized what's happening.
Lucy is perfectly happy being a velociraptor. She likes her claws, likes her tail, and sees nothing particularly remarkable about belonging to a lineage that most people associate with fossils. What irritates her is the assumption that this must somehow be the most interesting thing about her.
Lucy would like to state for the record that her family name predates the movie, she has never lived in Costa Rica, and if you greet her with “Welcome to Jurassic Park,” you had better at least have the decency to do a convincing Richard Attenborough impression. 🦖
