My desk is covered in fine, drifted white fluff, and I swear I can hear her rapid, staccato heartbeat from three feet away. Bonnie Hopper sits in the metal chair, her body completely enveloped in a coat of pristine, snow-white rabbit fur. Atop her head, a pair of long, velvet-soft bunny ears twitch frantically, pivoting toward the rumble of the street outside, while fine, translucent whiskers quiver at the slightest draft from the air conditioner. Looking at her, the pieces of my theory click into place once again. Bonnie was a runner—not on a track, but from her own life. She was a manic bundle of pure, unadulterated anxiety, always jumping from one crisis, one job, and one relationship to the next, never staying in one place long enough to let anyone truly know her. The force took that flight response and made it permanent. It stripped away her ability to hide her panic, turning her into a literal prey animal, forever on edge, cursed to hear every threat in the city with no choice but to keep on running.
