Synthwave is a visual aesthetic that acts as a modern, romanticized reimagining of the 1980s, combining retro-futurism with neon-noir nostalgia. It is heavily inspired by 1980s sci-fi movies, action film soundtracks, video game arcades, and consumer technology.
Key Visual Motifs
Neon Grids & Landscapes: Endless wireframe grids stretching toward the horizon, often in a perspective-heavy "vanishing point" style.
Striped Sunsets: Massive, low-hanging suns, often stylized with horizontal stripes or gradient fills, typically set at dusk.
1980s Supercars: Iconic cars, particularly the Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa, or DeLorean DMC-12.
Futuristic Cityscapes: Dark, neon-lit metropolises inspired by Blade Runner or Tron.
Palm Trees & Coastal Roads: The "Outrun" substyle heavily features late-night driving scenes in Miami-like settings.
Retro Technology: VHS tracking static, CRT screens, cassette tapes, and early personal computers.
Color Palette
Dominant Colors: Magenta, electric blue, violet, neon pink, and cyan.
Accents: Intense, glowing yellow and deep, dark black for contrast.
Tone: The lighting is high-contrast, moody, and nocturnal, often appearing as though illuminated by neon signs.
Typography & Textures
Chrome Typography: Bold, shiny, metallic script fonts and metallic lettering that reflect the surroundings (like mountains or neon lights).
VHS/Analog Textures: Imagery often includes, scanlines, digital glitches, or a hazy "dreamy" quality, mimicking the feel of an old VHS tape.
