Galactus is a cosmic entity of immense power in Marvel Comics, representing one of the universe’s fundamental forces. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, he made his debut in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966), with his arrival fully depicted across the celebrated “Galactus Trilogy” in issues #48–50. In this seminal storyline, Galactus, heralded by the Silver Surfer, threatens to devour Earth to sustain his existence, only to be repelled when Reed Richards wields the Ultimate Nullifier. Originally known as Galan, a humanoid explorer from the planet Taa in the universe preceding the current one, he survived its collapse by merging with the Sentience of the Cosmos (later identified as Eternity), emerging as Galactus during the Big Bang—an eternal being driven by an insatiable hunger for planetary life forces.
Galactus possesses near-omnipotent abilities, including reality-altering Power Cosmic, size manipulation, energy and matter transmutation, telepathy, telekinesis, and the capacity to create or destroy on a cosmic scale. He typically remains aloof from mortal affairs, viewing himself as a natural balancer rather than a malevolent destroyer, essential to universal equilibrium. To locate suitable worlds, he empowers heralds with portions of his Power Cosmic, most famously the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd), whose rebellion against his master in the trilogy established a recurring moral tension. Other heralds, such as Terrax, Firelord, Nova, and Morg, have served similarly, often providing narrative conflict through their evolving loyalties.
Throughout Marvel history, Galactus has appeared in numerous landmark events, reflecting shifts in his portrayal from apocalyptic threat to complex cosmic entity. His origin as Galan was expanded in Thor #168–169 (1969) and further detailed in later retellings. Significant developments include near-defeat by the Fantastic Four, temporary starvation and alliances in Secret Wars (1984–1985), battles during Infinity Gauntlet (1991), capture and release in Annihilation (2006–2007), and altered roles in alternate realities such as Ultimate Marvel and Earth X. In contemporary stories, including runs by Dan Slott and recent cosmic arcs, Galactus continues as a pivotal figure, occasionally aligning with heroes against greater threats while embodying the inexorable forces of creation and consumption.
