As World War II ravaged the bodies of its practitioners, demand for prosthetic body parts soared to record heights, prompting new innovations in the industry. Utilizing the phantom limb phenomenon, the Electronic Neurological Augmentation project was intended to create fully functional prosthetics via a direct connection to their recipients' nervous systems, but this same technology was used to transfer the conscious minds of death row inmates and war criminals into digital bodies in a virtual reality program known as the "Unworld". Following a string of violent incidents with the subjects, they were tethered to A.I. programs, each with a unique positive attribute, to keep them in check.

The subject known as "Meanie", who served in the Imperial Japanese Army, was seemingly killed when an artillery shell ripped clean through her chest on its way to its intended target, but her brain was preserved well enough to remain functional through a series of inhumane surgeries by her comrades. Following the end of the war and her subsequent detention, her mind was tethered to the "Salesperson" program and sent to the Unworld to atone for the crimes and atrocities of her superiors.
