    THIS IS ALL VERY OUTDATED

Much like everything in AI, this is already broken and deprecated. You can still use it to look and get a feel for how nodes should connect but... you can ask Grok/Gemini in very accurate detail which nodes to replace and what connectors go where.

NEW VERSION IS SAME BUT WITHOUT USE EVERYWHERE NODES

    new users: use this version

    Workflow for Beginners

Plug and play workflow for new users to ComfyUI or users upgrading from older Stable Diffusions. Or maybe you're just having trouble getting your flow to work and need a look at someone's nodes setup.

Just download missing nodes from Manager and refresh till you have everything.

Sections include helpful notes for nodes or settings.

Several downloads I recommend, (these are illustrious XL specific):

    • Lazy Embeddings for ALL
I use lazypos, lazyneg, and lazyhand
      These go into ComfyUI>models>embeddings

    • ControlNet models for illustriousXL
Use which ever ones you prefer
I tend to only need Canny/Lineart/Depth
      These go into ComfyUI>models>controlnet

    • OpenPoseXL2 model
This is SDXL but it works better than any IL versions I've found

    • Refiner/Upscaler model
I prefer 4x_NMKD-Siax_200k. This is entirely preference but, a model is needed to make use of the upscaler.
Download the pth and put it into ComfyUI>models>upscale_models

    • VAE
Grab a VAE. If you use Illustrious, make sure it is an Illustrious VAE. If your images are washed out or look faded, most likely you didn't have a VAE.

    Basic Flow

    • Checkpoint + Multi-Lora loader

    • Prompts

    • Controlnet with Breakdown
load an image and create an openpose/canny/lineart that now inserts into generation
      easy to bypass/turn off

    • KSampler (Output Settings)

    • Refiner/Upscaler 1.5x

    • Image Save + Preview Image
Normally ComfyUi does not actually save your images. It stores them temporarily. This fixes that. Now your images get saved in the output folder. Just like the good old SD 1.5 days.

If you're looking for inpainting and needing to do precise touch ups, there's plenty of workflows on Civitai for that.

If you are new to IllustriousXL or ComfyUI in general, this may help. If you are new to AI art and you just watched some random tutorial that was months old, this may help.

This is something I dreamed about as a kid. I could type in words and the computer can bring that imagination to life! I waited 30 years for this and now the internet is telling me not to use AI? I waited long enough. You did too. Take this and make something. The only thing stopping you is your imagination.

    Description

This is how it is.  I'm not going to upload every change I make to a workflow. That would be annoying. No one needs those notifications.

Thanx for this workflow. But seeing that i am a beginner. Where can i get the pre processor openpose model from. It keeps saying none when i want to choose it in the node

    Choose the OpenPoseXL2.safetensors
    Put that into ComfyUI>models>controlnet

Let me know if that worked for you. Check the "Show More" description area on this page for anything else you may be missing.

When i use this workflow for generating pictures without the openpose part, it works great. When i use the controlnet part is get distorted faces and bodyparts when i go to high steps in the refiner. Mostly above 25 steps

warsound75 It took me a while to get the controlnet part working right as well. Make sure you're using the same preprocessor option as the load controlnet model option. Some safetensors for the load controlnet work better than others. The OpenPoseXL2 worked great for me but the Illustrious open pose was giving me the results you mentioned.

    Dreaded 'use_everywhere' loop error

Click Manager at the top, Custom Nodes Manager, search cg-use-everywhere

    ogbtjyqat450Jul 29, 2025

Duhbooki My understanding is that a comfyui update broke cg-use-everywhere. I'm using the latest version 6.2.2 with cui version 0.3.46

ogbtjyqat450 didn't realize that. Hopefully it still tells you where all the lines were meant to go with the use-everywhere nodes.

The model lines go from Lora Tuner to KSampler and Refine Upscaler
The positive lines go from Apply Controlnet to KSampler and Refine Upscaler

VAE lines are a mess but they go to Apply Controlnet, Refine Upscaler, and VAE Decode

Hoping this helps anyone else with the same issue.

ogbtjyqat450 I realized an easier way is to click Manager at the top and select Switch ComfyUI to a previous version.

    ogbtjyqat450Jul 30, 2025

Duhbooki True but not helpfull if you need the latest cui version for something else, for example, wan2.2. Probably best to wait on c-u-e and cui to sort out the bugs.

I am experimenting with it right now. Are there any good examples of it working? Results are pretty smudged so far.

All the illustrious images I've uploaded are using this workflow.
    https://civitai.com/user/duhbooki/images?baseModels=Illustrious&sort=Newest

Except the two octopus samurai ones, those were generated on site.

Need to be able to see mature content in settings for most of them.

Duhbooki I managed to make use of some control nets. Used your workflow as an example <3.
Still many things are not clear for me, as I am new. (as example this yellow upscale node)

jackuarren There are many different refiner/upscalers you can use to replace that one.

My preferred model to use is 4x_NMKD-Siax. I forgot to put this in the see more section.
    https://huggingface.co/gemasai/4x_NMKD-Siax_200k/tree/main

    Put this in ComfyUI>models>upscale_models.

This specific node would upscale your image by 1.5x. I left the scale_by at 0.50 since I hardly ever need anything too big.

I also like to have refiner steps at half of the amount of steps used in the original KSampler. This just tends to work for me.

Yes, another user mentioned this issue. The comfy-use-everywhere node needs to be updated but it's been taking a while. You could click Manager at the top and select Switch ComfyUI to a previous version if you still wish to use it.

Otherwise, you can remove the use everywhere nodes and manually link the nodes yourself.

The model lines go from Lora Tuner to KSampler and Refine Upscaler
The positive lines go from Apply Controlnet to KSampler and Refine Upscaler

VAE lines are a mess but they go to Apply Controlnet, Refine Upscaler, and VAE Decode

I uploaded a new zip. It has all the use everywhere nodes removed.

    @Duhbooki I'm sorry, but even with this new version I still get: Loop Detected TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading '0') at http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:196:81 at Array.findIndex (<anonymous>) at find_all_upstream (http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:196:48) at recursive_follow (http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:228:5) at recursive_follow (http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:221:16) at http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:230:17 at Array.forEach (<anonymous>) at recursive_follow (http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:228:45) at http://127.0.0.1:8188/extensions/cg-use-everywhere/use_everywhere_utilities.js:230:17 at Array.forEach (<anonymous>), undefined

I don't see that type of node now, so I really don't understand why it continues to appear... However, removing manually the custom node cg-use-everywhere it magically works!

@moemoery978 Don't know why it showed up with the new one too. Glad you were about to fix the issue.
