Jean Harlow was a Hollywood sex symbol and comedian who became the first female film star on the cover of Life magazine in 1937. Born Harlean Carpenter in Kansas City, Missouri, she took her stage name from her mother's maiden name. Harlow was known for her platinum blonde hair, "bad girl" roles, and sense of humor. She had her breakthrough in Howard Hughes' 1930 World War I film Hell's Angels.
