Fred Dibnah (1938–2004) was a British steeplejack, engineer, and beloved television personality renowned for his passion for Britain's industrial heritage. Born in Bolton, Lancashire, Dibnah gained national fame in 1979 with a BBC documentary showcasing his work restoring tall industrial chimneys by hand—often without scaffolding. His deep respect for Victorian engineering and steam power led to a long career in broadcasting, where his warm demeanor and encyclopedic knowledge charmed viewers across generations. Whether restoring steam engines, demolishing towering chimneys, or narrating the story of the Industrial Revolution, Dibnah embodied the grit, pride, and ingenuity of working-class Britain. In 2004, shortly before his death, he was awarded an MBE for services to heritage and broadcasting.
