In the crags and brush of the Great Lowlands, the quokkas hop and smile with bright, wide eyes. They huddle together in shady dens and pop out at sunset to bounce through the grass, wriggling their little noses and squeaking happily.

Adorable, you think as you crouch down. They smile at you, and you smile back. How can you not? They’re such delightful little fellers.

Then one leaps and latches onto your face, claws gouging out your eyes, teeth ripping off your lips, and blood pours down your cheeks and chin, and your armor and clothes are soaked with it, just soaked with it, and you open your mouth to scream and its claws are in your mouth, tearing at your tongue, and the rest join in and leap on you, and you topple over on your back in a flurry of fur and claws and teeth, thrashing and rolling and trying to get the damn things off you because it hurts, oh gods, it hurts, and they’re eating you alive.

The quokka hops forward, nibbling on a cob of corn, and the Silverleaf ranger crouches down.

“Aw, look at him,” he says.

Kaylia’s eyes widen. “No, don’t!”

“But he’s so cute,” the ranger says, and when the quokka smiles at him, he smiles back.
