    Overview

    HowMuch is a Python tool designed to scan your drives (or a specified directory) and report on the total space used by files with specific extensions, mainly .ckpt and .safetensors.

    It outputs:

    • The total storage capacity of each scanned drive or directory.

    • The space occupied by .ckpt and .safetensors files.

    • The free space available.

    • A neat bar chart visualizing the above data.

    Can anyone explain in plain language what this exactly is, and are the 400gb-LoraXL repository or FFusionXL-Base required to be installed in conjunction with this checkpoint to work?

    The description is sure thorough, I think, but it's written in a way that clearly is geared towards people who have way more tech knowledge than usual on here...this is the 3rd time I've looked at all the info, scratched my head, and wound up not trying it because I don't really get it - or what's required. Anyone? Or am I just dumb?

    From what I can see, basically the model maker have extracted from some of the major checkpoint on civitai and turned them into LoRAs: https://civitai.com/models/143636

    The idea being that instead of keeping many large checkpoints (about 6G each), you replace them with the much smaller LoRAs (about 1/2G each). Of course, it will not replicate the checkpoint completely, but kind of gives you something that has some of the flavor of the original.

    If you followed me so far, then what this checkpoint is basically taking all those LoRAs and then merge them all into one single checkpoint! The idea being that this is a "super merged checkpoint" that can sort of emulate all those other checkpoints.

    Of course, such a beast is presumably "Jack of all trades, master of none". How good it is, I have no idea, but should be a fun checkpoint to play with.

    I am just an amateur, not an A.I. researcher, so I hope what I wrote is correct, any correction is welcome. Thanks in advance 🙏

    @NobodyButMeow yea, that's exactly it. If one were to merge the checkpoints as-is, it would be an overfit mess and unusable checkpoint that would come out. By merging the extracts instead, it helps to prevent the overfit problem. But the stated ability to emulate all the checkpoints which were extracted and merged here is oversold. It's just not something that is possible with the SDXL tech or any diffusion-style tech on the market right now. The actual result of the merge is a severe net loss of capability and flexibility compared to keeping maybe half a dozen of the more interesting focused checkpoints whose extracts were used here.

    People are looking for a solution to the disk space problem of holding so many checkpoints, but in truth, a solution isn't possible.

    @shapeshifter83 Thanks for info. Yes, I agree that it is just not possible to produce a one size fit for all checkpoint. As for the disk size problem, SSD are cheap enough that it should not be an issue for most people.

    To me, the main advantage of a LoRA based approach is that it would allow faster "switching" of models. For people who like to try the same prompt with different models, the saving can be quite significant.

    Edit: if you have enough VRAM, there is an option in Automatic1111 that lets you keep several models in VRAM so that you can switch quickly between them. If you have enough system RAM, there is also an option to keep several model in RAM to speed up the switching.
