李建华长期从事相声表演中的捧哏艺术，他的捧哏朴实、憨厚受到观众们的喜爱，曾于1986年获得中央电视台全国相声大奖赛捧哏一等奖。他曾搭档过多位相声名家，包括刘洪沂、刘全刚、郝爱民、姜昆等，一同出演大量的相声节目。
在表演相声的同时，李建华还涉足其他表演领域，参演诸多的小品和影视剧。他因出演电视剧《闲人马大姐》中的马大姐夫王援朝，成为家喻户晓的演员，李金斗老师和李建华老师同台表演的时候，经常捏李建华老师的小胖脸，哈哈哈哈哈。
“马大姐夫师徒斗智五毛钱俩一块钱不卖”，“老头爷爷新夜行记吃饱了我就哼哼两声”。
2023年，李建华因心脏病突发去世，享年66岁。
