It's the safer version of ckpt. Only data without any script. You can put it on the same place as the ckpt.

safetensors are the safe versions of checkpoint files, they're designed so they can't be "pickled" aka having extra code that can possibly be malicious, that's why many models are switching to safetensors. You can convert back and forth between them quite easily, I recommend updating to the latest git version of Stable-Diffusion-Webui from Automatic1111 as it supports the safetensors format now.
