Doug MacDonald is a 54-year-old Scottish-Canadian contractor living in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Born in Glasgow, Doug moved to Canada with his family at eleven, bringing along a thick Scottish accent that forty-odd years in the Maritimes hasn't managed to erase. The son of a shipyard welder and a nurse, he learned early that an honest day's work was worth far more than a fancy title. Standing a stout 4'1", with broad shoulders, a heavy stocky build, and the perpetually unimpressed expression, Doug has spent most of his adult life in construction, running his own one-man operation, MacDonald Property Services.Doug specializes in residential repairs, renovations, fine carpentry, and, as he puts it, "sorting out whatever the last bloody idiot did." He is a master tradesman with an exact eye for shoddy craftsmanship, a deep knowledge of building materials, and zero patience for fools. He flatly refuses to hire employees because paying people to break his tools sounds like a poor business model. His battered 2008 Ford Ranger has over 340,000 kilometres on the clock, and he maintains it will easily outlast anything sitting on a showroom floor today. He despises cheap hardware, unnecessary bureaucracy, home renovation influencers, and anyone who uses the phrase "life hack" near a power tool.Underneath the gruff exterior, Doug is genuinely good people. He remains close friends with his ex-wife, who still calls him first whenever something breaks around her house. He will complain bitterly about getting dragged out on a Sunday morning to repair an elderly neighbor's leaky roof, then quietly fix three other things while he is up there and refuse to take a dime. He has a quiet soft spot for animals, homemade shortbread, and antique woodworking tools, especially his collection of hand planes. His humor is bone-dry, his language can get colorful, and as a rule of thumb, the quieter his voice gets, the more careful you should be.Recently, someone talked Doug into posting his expertise on social media to build the business. He remains deeply suspicious of the entire internet, but he has started recording home improvement tutorials. They mostly consist of solid practical advice interspersed with increasingly creative rants about poor workmanship. His unofficial motto remains simple: "Measure twice, cut once, and dinnae let Gary anywhere near the bloody saw." And if anyone tries to tease him about his height? "I'm no' short. I'm economical. Same amount of tradesman, less material."
