March 8] 1898, Saint Petersburg) was a Russian landscape painter, academician and professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts, and a core member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) movement.<ul><li>Origins: Born in Yelabuga (Vyatka Governorate) into a merchant family; his father was a highly educated man, a local historian and archaeologist who founded the Yelabuga museum and instilled in his son a scholarly love of nature.</li><li>Training: Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1852–1856), then at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg under the landscape master Sokrat Vorobyov, winning a gold medal.</li><li>1862–1865 — Abroad: Traveled on an Academy scholarship to Switzerland, Germany (Düsseldorf) and France; concluded that a Russian artist must paint Russian nature, and returned home to devote his life to the native forest.</li><li>Academic career: Academician (1865), professor (1873), and later head of the landscape workshop at the Imperial Academy.</li><li>The Peredvizhniki: A founding-generation member of the Wanderers, exhibiting his epic forests at their traveling exhibitions from 1871 onward.</li><li>The masterpieces: Noon.
