With the rise of more prudish cultural sensitivities in the Victorian Era, Peter Thomson (a tailor based in New York and Philadelphia) promoted his school uniform based on the style as "good taste for girls" around 1900. Dresses with sailor aesthetics were already growing in popularity, but the standardization of style, as well as customization of material (linen for summer or wool for winter), made the style longstanding. As East Asia moved towards modernizing and westernizing, the adoption of these uniforms replaced the traditional dress in schools, allowing females to partake in more activities as a byproduct.
