The Light Beneath the Roof

The Light Beneath the Roof
Introduce the old wooden house hidden deep in a forest. Explain why your main character returns after many years and discovers a locked storage room. That night, a strange glow appears beneath its door.
The character enters the dusty room and discovers a turquoise-and-golden light rising from behind an ancient chest. Its rays pass through gaps between the wooden roof planks, although there is no lamp, fire, or electrical source.
The character finds mysterious carvings on the chest and matching symbols on the roof beams. When a hand touches the chest, the light pulses as if something inside has recognized its visitor.
An old family journal reveals that someone encountered the same light decades earlier. Its final pages contain a warning, but the explanation of what the light protects is missing.
At midnight, the light grows stronger. The roof beams begin vibrating, the carved symbols illuminate one by one, and strange whispers seem to emerge from inside the walls. The character must decide whether to open the chest.
Inside the chest, the character discovers a tiny glowing doorway that reveals another version of the same house. A figure stands inside that distant room, appearing to know the character's name. The light may be a message from another time—or a warning about what is coming.
By morning, the house seems normal again, and the chest appears empty. The character believes the mystery has ended—until a new glowing symbol appears on the roof above their own bedroom. The final unanswered question: Was the light ever trapped in the chest, or was it waiting for the character to return?
