Proposal: Price Tags and Price Steps

    TL;DR:

    • Price tags let you save a set of prices once and apply it to anything you publish, instead of filling in every field each time.
    • Price steps let a price change on its own: on a schedule, on how many people have bought, or on how much it has earned.
    • A price can drop to zero on its own. Once a model has earned what you wanted, it opens up to everybody.
    • We're proposing to retire donation goals. 512 donations site-wide in the last 30 days, down 85% in a year, and price steps do the job better.
    • This is a proposal. Nothing is built. Tell us where it's wrong.

    What's annoying today

Every time you price a model, you fill in the same fields again. Two things kept coming up in the Creator Studio channel: save the prices you use, and let a price change without you going back to edit it.

    Price tags

Set up a price once, give it a name, apply it when you publish. Change the tag later and everything on it can follow.

It isn't tied to models. The same tag works on anything we sell, so comics and galleries get it for free when they need it.

    Price steps

A price that moves on its own. Three ways:

By time. The price drops on a schedule, instead of you setting an alarm.

By purchase count. First hundred buyers pay one price, the next thousand pay another. Early buyers get rewarded for showing up, and you're not guessing on day one what the whole run should be worth.

By amount earned. Once a model has earned a number you set, the price changes. Set that last step to zero and the model opens to everybody the moment it has made what you wanted from it.

That last one is worth sitting with. It means a group of people can effectively buy a model out of early access by buying it, and the creator gets paid for exactly the amount they asked for.

    Retiring donation goals

We think donation goals should go away.

Almost nobody uses them. Across the whole site there were 512 donations to a goal in the last 30 days. In November last year there were 3,771 in the month; last month there were 578. That's an 85% drop in under a year and it is still falling. A lot of what looks like donation activity in our own numbers is people buying early access, which fills the goal bar as a side effect.

They also never quite worked. When you donate to a goal you aren't promised anything, and your Buzz goes to the creator whether the goal fills or not. That's a tip, and we already have tips.

An earnings-based price step does what a goal was reaching for, and does it honestly: the money goes to the creator, the buyer gets the model, and when the target is hit it opens for everyone.

This is a proposal. Tell us where we're wrong.

None of this is built. We'd rather hear it now.

    1. Would you use a saved price tag, or do you price each thing deliberately anyway?
    2. Time, purchase count, or amount earned: which would you actually reach for, and are we missing one?
    3. Should buyers see the steps you've set up? We could leave that to you, or show them always so nobody's guessing what the price does next.
    4. If the steps are visible, should there be a progress bar against them, the way donation goals had one?
    5. If you run donation goals today, does an earnings step replace what you were using them for?
